morning with the officials who are looking over the ground and planning for the survey of the aide track for the Latin Rand Powder mills Those of the railroad officials who were in the party were: Supt Tbos A Lawson Smith assistant superintendent of Chicago Roadmaster Deiner of Harvard Chief Engineer Robinson of Chicago Engineer Abbots of Chicago and Thos Ryan of Janesville the boss grading contractor Gen Supt Patterson of the Latlin Rand Powder Co was also on the ground The side track will extend over a mile and a half and will circle all the buildings Grading for the track will begin Tuesday morning and will be rushed to completion It will take about three weeks to complete the grading and laying of the track Ground for the powder mill will be broken May 1 Pleasant Prairie will see more business in the next few months than it has in its whole history Teamsters shovelers and other workmen are already beginning to take the little village by storm preparing for the beginning of work Haw Mads No Effort to Cob struct Their Lins The railway franchise question still remains the favorite topic of conversation on the streets but nothing of importance has occurred during the day The restraining order issued by Mayor Gorman was duly served on the managers and did not in any way surprise them as they had expected some action on the part of the City Council They declared that the order of the Mayor was of no effect and that they would not be delayed by the action of the Mayor and the new Council The agents of the Mayor and Council are still keeping a close watoh over the terminus of the road but the company have made no efforts to break their way into the city by force All sorts of storieB are told iD regard to the proposed action of the company the most improbable story being that they will begin work on Tuesday with a force of five hundred men All these stories seem to be without any foundation whatever From what can be learned about town today it seems an absolute fact that all rights recently granted to Mr Slush have already been transferred to the Milwaukee company It is understood that the Milwaukee company have retained Kearney and Qnarles Spence te Quarles to attend to any legal questions which may arise of the Chief of Police for the fiscal year ending April 1st 1899 beg leave to report that we have carefully examined the same Year committee would recommend that the report be accepted and that the same be published with the pro ceedings of the Common Council In reference to the suggestions as made by the Chief in said report we would committee on sewers reported as 1 follows: To His Hon the Mayor and Common Council of the City of Kenosha: Gentlemen: Your committee on sewers to whom was referred the application of Oberst Hamlet for a drainlayers license would respectfully report that we have carefully examined same and would recommend that the Clerk be and he is hereby instructed to issue the proper license for said parties against the construction of a sewer on South street between Church street and West street that the committee would recommend that the same be referred to the Council as a committee of the whole On motion of Aid FraDke the report was accepted Adjourned regular meeting of Common Council April litb 1899 Called to order by President Calkins Aid Gonnermann Brister Weier Berns Tarbell and Franke Minutes of meetings March 20th and 22nd were read and approved During the reading of the minutes Aid Gorman came in and took his seat and Mayor Pettit came in and took Aid seat After the approval of the minutes Mayor Pettit and Aid Calkins took their respective seats Stemm addressed the Council in a petition as follows: Your Honor and Gentlemen of the Common Council of the City of Kenosha: My object in appearing before you is to petition your Hon Body to consummate what has been so nobly and generously inaugurated by the Congress of the United States I refer to a bill that was passed in the mouth of November 1998 instructing the Secretary of War to provide way and means for the bringing back to their native homes for burial all soldiers who fell in battle or who died of disease on the Island of Cuba in the late war with Spain On last Wednesday April 5th 1899 at 4 there was laid to rest in our beautiful The following resolution was offered A VERY LAUGHABLE COMEDY $90 FOR THE FLAG Blondell Co at tbe Opera House Sunday Evening A Cheerful comes endorsed by all the principal critics of the leading cities who pronounce it exceedingly well written and splendidly casted who not only see and bring out the fun in the lines but furnish a fund of clever specialties as well which are on the highest order Edward Blondell who assumes the leading role an irresistibly droll comedian and he has hut to speak or otherwise distort the'repose of his countenance to set hie auditors in a roar Libbie Blondell as the innocent kid proves to be one of the best ingenues now before the public Incidental to the play a number of clever specialties will be introduced The annual parish meeting of St Episcopal church which is usually Leld Easter Monday evening was called for Friday evening and In response to the call several members of the congregation were in attendance After a short service the regular business was taken up The reports of the different guilds and societies were read and showed that the asso-ciations were In good financial condition In the course of the year a great deal of money was raised by these societies and the women manage in a business like way the work assigned to them Their reports compare very favorably with those handed in by the treasurer of the parish When tho reports had been read the meeting proceeded to the election of wardens and vestrymen for the ensuing year On the motion of Strong the clerk was instructed to cast a ballot for Calkins as senior warden and A Lance as junior warden Ballots were then taken for vestrymen and resulted in the selection of the following members: Chas Brown Strong Dr Wm Farr Fisher Nathan Allen Thomas Hansen A French and A Rowe In a short address the rector congratulated the meeting on the successful year just ended He then went on to speak of the prospects of the parish and said that by May 1 the debt of the church would be refunded at 5 per cent thus saving 1 per cent interest and relieving the ladies of that extra burden He said further that through the kindness of a gentleman who had contributed $1000 a new guild hall was practically ensured and he hoped to have it finished and ready for consecration Bept 21 the birthday of St church After a vote of thanks to the ladies of the parish for the efficient way in which they had worked during the year and after the Joxology and bene-diotion the meeting adjourned St church now starts on a new year with very bright prospects and chances for increase of membership A wll Earned Promotion Raether the assistant at the Kenosha Light house received a no tice this morning that he had been appointed to the position of First As slstant Lighthouse keeper at Wind point It is not known how soon he will assume the duties of his new office but he is ordered to be in readinoaa to assume his new duties at any time For twelve years Mr Raether has been oounected with the local station in this city and his effioient services have proved him to be well worthy of this promotion The vaoanoy at the local station caused by the advancement of Assistant Raether will be filled according to the civil service rules as soon as the change is made Mr many friends will be glad to hear of his advancement Supper and Dance Proves a Great Success One of the most enjoyable social events given in Kenosha since the opening of the post Lenten season was the social supper and dance of the Relief Corps at Central Music Hall Friday night the proceeds of which are to be used for the purpose of purchasing a flag for Company A large crowd waBin attendance and the social netted over $90 for the flag fund Between the honrs of 5 and 8 supper was served after which the following program was rendered: Plano Solo Miss Marian Hale Vocal Solo Mrs Dexter allow these treaty rights of ours to be Nation Acting In Harmony Washington April 15 The threatening clouds which drifted upon the Samoan horizon have disappeared and the three governments interested have obtained complete control of the situation The United States Germany and Great Britain have succeeded in harmonizing their views concerning the instructions to be Issued the commission that will be entrusted with the management of Samoan affairs It is understood to be the purpose of the three governments to recall their consuls at Apia It is proposed to permit them to remain and transact their consular duties but to relieve them from all participation In the administration of government upon the island American Attacked Paris April Le Soir publishes what it claims is an interview with Herr von Buelow-Schlatau first secretary of the German embassy in Paris in which he attributes the entire responsibility for the Samoan troubles to the Americans Their victories over Spain he says has made them believe themselves a first-class military nation Intoxicated with their success they have continued to utter war cries and their newspapers have of course published violent articles Altogether they seem to be more agitated and more excited over the matter than anybody else German Planter Now on the Fa Ike Berlin April 15 The Hamburg correspondent announces that the German planter who has been arrested in Samoa charged with Inciting the Ma-taafans to fight and taken on board the British cruiser Tauranga has been transferred to the German warship Falke TO ATTACK CALAMBA Gen Lawton Concentrates HI Force at Santa Crus Manila April 15 The enemy has been driven to the hills by Gen Law-ton who is withdrawing his troops from five captured towns concentrating them at Santa Cruz and beginning a movement by water to Calamba fifteen miles to the west Many of the Spanish prisoners in the hands of the Filipinos have been released by Gen Lawton who has also given wide publicity to the proclamation of the American commission Fifty-one sick and wounded Americans are returning to Manila The fighting has been entirely free from lootihg and burning Gen Lawton says that his is a campaign of education Terrible Famine lo Armenia Moscow April 15 According to letters received from Constantinople terrible famine prevails in Armenia and in southwestern Arabia In Hedjaz and Yemen Calkins who moved its adoption Be it resolved That permission he and the same is hereby given the manager of the Rhode opera house to exhibit or give shows concerts entertainments and theatrical performances therein in accordance with the charter provisions of the city of Kenosha and the laws of the state of Wisconsin from and after the 10th day of April A 1899 for the sum of fifty (50) dollars per year to be paid in advance into the city treasury and that the custom of giving city officials tickets or passes therefor be from said date discontinued That upon the payment of said sum a for more tasty and artistic school room decorations has brought results and after school Friday the first two of the pictures purohased were hung in the assembly room at the high school building Thfe two pictures purchased by the committee are gems of art The one is carbon print of the famous Madonna and while the other Is a carbon print entitled The Education of the Greek A third picture has been purchased in the way of a freize of the Parthenon at Athens Among the other works of art already purchased is a marble bust which has not as yet arrived The addition of these pictures have made the decoration of the rooms much more elaborate and they will assist in giving the children a more practical idea of the artistie city the home of his birth all that was mortal of Adolph Newhouse whose and instructed to pay to the County Treasurer the sum of $75 and to cancel and deliver to the petitioner tax receipt No 892 On motion of Aid Brister the petition was referred to the committee on Ashland Ave just south of the city limits at the age of sixty five years Mrs Lambrechts had long been a sufferer from disease and had been confined to her room for some months past The deceased was born in Prussia in 1834 and was married in 1856 to August Lambrecht Mrs Lambrecht came to Kenosha with her husband in 1862 and located on the farm in Pleasant Prairie where she has since resided The deceased was a devoted member of the German Lutheran church and before her late illness was one of the most zealous workers in the congregation A husband and six children all grown survive her The
